  FM Antenna Tuning
by Mark Persons

Minnesota....a great place.

FM Antenna

Here is Mark tuning a single bay 500 watt FM broadcast antenna.  The antenna has only half a radome on it to allow the tuning to be done.   Mark is using a spectrum analyzer with return loss bridge to set the antenna resonant frequency and match at the carrier frequency.  Useable bandwidth is viewed on the spectrum analyzer.  The work is relatively simple when only one bay is involved.  It gets much more complex when the number of bays increases.

This antenna is currently being used on an FM translator.   The coverage is excellent.   Part of the reason is the true circular wave front generated by the antenna.   This is by design.  Not all FM broadcast antennas can do that.

The work is done on a "time and material" basis.  Tuning this antenna, along with hardware modifications, cost the client about $250.00.

Collin Christensen (on the left) and Wally Christensen (on the right) are aiding in antenna tuning of two FM antennas which were used at the KISD/KJOE transmitter site.  Retuning these antennas saved the client about $50,000.
2/24/03:  Mark, thought you'd like to know: we just put our Milbank, SD translator on the air on Saturday using the antenna we had you retune to 90.5 MHz and it works great!  The VSWR is very low and the translator sounds great with better than expected coverage!  Al Gilbertson WNCB (now WJRF), Christian Radio, Duluth, MN.  http://www.wncb.com and http://refugeradio.com
