The KNSI (formerly
KCLD-AM) tower has been a fixture in the landscape of southwest St. Cloud,
MN since the early 1950's. This huge self supporting tower was also
home to KCLD FM before it moved to 1000 foot tower northwest of town.
Note the 1950's style transmitter building below with rounded corners. It housed the studios at one time too. |

Here is your intrepid Broadcast Engineer, Mark Persons, tuning an RF-Decoupling unit that was ultimately installed at the 400 foot level on the 490 foot KNSI-AM tower. The unit electrically disconnects the top of the tower from the bottom of the tower. There is an FM antenna at the top of the tower for KCML 99.9 Radio that would have decreased the AM antenna efficiency if the decoupling was not in place. |

Part of the project involved temporarily feeding KNSI-AM into the massive three-leg self-supporting tower. Just below the Delta OIB-3 Operating Impedance Bridge is an MFJ Versa Tuner V ham antenna tuning unit. This allowed for the removal and replacement of the station's antenna coupling network during the day. The work was done December 3, 1998 on a winter day. Temperatures were about zero degrees at the time. |

The new AM antenna coupling unit, which connects to a unipole feed system on the tower. Standing next to the coupling unit is Craig Bomgaars, who is the engineer for KCLD/KNSI Radio. Behind him you can see two of the huge tower legs. |
