Here is Scott Schmeling, Corporate Chief Engineer for the Linder Stations. He has just removed the PA tube socket from a Harris HT-20 FM Transmitter. This is no minor task as it takes an hour to do so. In the background are two Telewave wattmeters used to measure input power, output power, and VSWR on the directional coupler feeding RF from the 700 watt solid state RF driver to the 8990/20,000A power amplifier tube. |

The tube
socket was removed for maintenance. Scott is aided by assistant Keith
Petermeyer as they work on the underside of the tube socket. A Sencore
Z-Meter was used to measure the capacitors on the tube socket assembly to
confirm everything was as it was supposed to be.
As it turned out, a finicky IPA to PA adjustment was the result of poor neutralization on the power amplifier tube. Adjusting neutralization, using a spectrum analyzer, took care of the tuning problem on this incident in August of 2006. |
