KWAD Radio has been a fixture in Wadena, MN, since just after WWII.  KNSP Radio in Staples was added in the 1990's.  Staples is a town between Wadena and Brainerd.  The town has pulled itself up by its bootstraps to do well in Central Minnesota.

Here is your intrepid broadcast engineer, Mark Persons, at the KWAD-AM transmitter site.  He is standing next to the 1948 vintage E. F. Johnson two-tower phasor.  On top of the phasor is a custom-built commonpoint adjustment network.  The station runs 1000 Watts non-directional day and 1000 Watts two-tower directional at night.

To the right is a rack with the antenna monitor and a Nautel J1000 AM Transmitter.  The transmitter is insulated from the rack with fiberglass rack stand-offs to reduce the likelihood of lightning damage.  Further to the right is the Gates BC-1G AM (1960's vintage) backup transmitter.

Before and after photos of the KWAD News Studio, which was rebuilt in April of 2006.  The original Sparta A-15 Audio Console, from the 1970's, was replaced by a new Arrakis Nova-10C.  This new console has 10 linear faders and is well liked by newsman Chad Moyer.  The rebuilt studio no longer has a reel-to-reel recorder and cartridge tape machines.  A wonderful improvement.  On the right is engineer Mark Persons checking it out.  Click on the right photo for a larger view.

This works GREAT!
After rebuilding

The old KKWS Main Studio console.  This one had input and
output audio transformers and was a "rat's nest" of wires.

Wiring below the counter top was in complete disarray.

Morning announcer Mike Danvers has been in radio since 1976 and at this station since 1984.  He has seen a lot of changes over the years.  Mike poses in the studio just before studio upgrade work began in August 2006.

Soon after, he is pleased with the upgraded KKWS Main Studio. The console is a Radio Systems RS-12A.  Click here or on the photo below to see a larger version of the photo.  Acoustical tile looks great on the walls too.

The KWAD AM Main Studio before renovation.  Note the messy wiring under the console.

Soon after, Dave Cox likes the studio changes. Click here or on the photo below to see a larger version of the photo.  Yes, there are still some turntables seeing daily use here.  Note the huge overhead monitor speaker.
