Unipoles for AM Broadcast |

![]() |
Unipole feed systems for AM towers generally have wider bandwidth for better audio performance. RF energy from an AM transmitter is fed into the unipole skirt wires. The tower is grounded at the base, which gives better lightning protection. Also, isocouplers are not needed for other antennas on a unipole tower. We sold and tuned a unipole antenna feed system at WLFN Radio in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The transmitter side of the antenna coupling network had a flat 50 ohms impedance from 1480, through 1490, and up to 1500 KHz. There were only two ohms of reactance at 1480 KHz and 1500 KHz. The station sounds excellent with this great match. In total, we have installed more than a dozen unipole systems on towers in the Minnesota area. Unipoles can be great de-tuning devices for towers that re-radiate AM signals. See KBUN.
