AM Loop Receiving Antenna |
|
Scott Schmeling, at the Linder Group of radio stations in Minnesota, needed a good receive antenna to pickup an AM station at one of their studio locations. Rather than spend a lot of money, Scott elected to build a non-shielded loop using 1-inch PVC electrical conduit with a PVC T connector. The antenna is to be mounted outdoors away from electrical noise. Scott will install a 0-365 pf variable capacitor across the five turns of loop to resonate the loop at the 540 to 1700 KHz AM frequency of interest. |
|
The plan is to connect a receiver across one turn of the loop. Note there is an F connector so that a 75-ohm coaxial cable can be connected to the loop. RG-59 or RG-6 cable is very plentiful today and makes for an inexpensive way to get the signal from the outside loop to a rack-mounted Dayton AF310 AM receiver.
The stories go on and on.
Stop in again sometime. I'll leave the soldering iron on for you.
