Technical Tips from Mark W. Persons
Upgrade for Nicom STL Receiver

This is a Nicom NLR 900 STL Receiver used in the 950 MHz range.  To improve noise performance, an Advanced Receiver Research model P900VDG GaAsFET preamplifier was added,  It has 18 dB of gain and a 0.7 dB noise figure.  This is impressive performance for about $130 of cost.  The preamplifier runs on the +15 VDC power supply in the receiver so connecting it was easy.
To help protect the preamplifier, a quarter-wave shorted stub was added.  In this case, it is the BNC T connector with a 2-inch or less long cable connected at the left end.  Since it is shorted, it provides some band-pass protection as well as excellent lightning protection to the preamplifier.

The stories go on and on.  Stop in again sometime.  I'll leave the soldering iron on for you.
